About Patricia

Patricia O'Brien has recently returned from the U.K. where she trained in the revolutionary, new Gastric Band Hypnosis technique which has had such amazing results overseas. Patricia completed her training under Steve Unsworth of VAK Hypnotherapy. Patricia's former trainers include Paul McKenna and Richard Bandler, co-developer of NLP.

With a background in teaching and counselling, specifically in the field of adult education, Patricia practised as a hypnotherapist in New Zealand before moving to Australia in 2006. Her areas of interest include weight loss, smoking cessation, loss of libido, stress reduction and self confidence. She believes strongly that clinical hypnosis allows clients to explore and solve their problems and worries in a guided and gentle way, effecting a lasting solution.

Patricia works regularly on behalf of the Cancer Council, assisting patients in radiation or chemotherapy. She teaches them pain and stress management and helps them manage their blood pressure and emotional response to the illness.

Patricia is fully qualified with a Diploma of Advanced Hypnotherapy, Certificate in Counselling (F.E.), Certificate in NLP, and a BA (Hons) Humanities. She is also a Reiki Master and a clinical member of the Australian Hypnotherapists' Association.

What can I believe about hypnotherapy?

Myth: being hypnotised will make me do silly things and I won't remember what happened.
Fact: you're not even unconscious during hypnotism; you'll probably feel deeply relaxed, but you will stay awake, aware, and in control. This form of hypnotherapy simply focuses on changing the way you think - not what you do! In terms of smoking cessation or Gastric Banding Hypnotherapy, your new thoughts may affect your actions (eating less, for example), but again, you remain in control.

Myth: hypnotherapy is inappropriate for people in business roles.
Fact: celebrities and business leaders all over the world have used hypnotherapy to increase confidence, lose weight, quit smoking and drug habits, beat insomnia, and boost their learning capacity and self-esteem. Hypnotism is nothing like the mystical interpretation you see in movies. A hypnotherapist merely uses your altered state of awareness to plant positive suggestions and help you reprogram your thinking.

What is hypnotherapy?

The concept of hypnotherapy may conjure images of Vegas style shows and swinging pendulums, but clinical hypnotherapy couldn't be further from the stereotypes.

From the day we are born we all accumulate memories, beliefs, habits and behaviour deep in the mind that all contribute to make us who we are today. Unknowingly, most of us will have picked up some self-limiting beliefs and negative conditioning as we grew and developed either at home, school, work or just in a social environment. Hypnotherapy helps you change those beliefs.

Hypnotherapy is so effective because it lies in the power of your unconscious mind, which stores all those memories, beliefs and habits. Through Hypnosis a deep state of relaxation can be induced, during which your unconscious mind is highly receptive to new or alternative ideas and perspectives, helping you to bring about life changes. Through hypnotherapy you can turn negatives into positives, take control and move forward successfully in your life.

Hypnotherapy helps the thought control process - it can change your feelings, change your thoughts, and change your behaviour in any given situation. Especially useful for replacing negative thoughts with positive ones - it will enable you to use unconscious influence to overcome problems. You will find it easier to attain your goals without a struggle.

Why have hypnotherapy?

Everyone reaches points in their lives where they just need a good listener. Someone who isn't going to judge, someone who will just take your troubles on board. Even the kindest friend or relative is not the same as talking to an experienced hypnotherapist. A professional won't just help you talk it out, they'll help you change things for good.

A supportive hypnotherapist can help you through a troubling time in your life. Often we are too close to our own problems to see them clearly, and talking to a professional will help you examine all your options and opinions and make a positive decision or life change. Even after a crisis has passed, hypnotherapy can help you come to terms with why it happened, and how to move on.

Getting professional help is not a sign of weakness. If you had a virus you would see a doctor; if you wanted to get fit you would see a personal trainer. You can use hypnotherapy to solve an existing issue, or even just to improve your life and day-to-day wellbeing.
